The Taylor pit was approximately 2 ha in size and had become the storage area for old farm equipment and building materials. The landowner was highly motivated to clean it up when told it could be made into workable farmland again. The site was graded to achieve a very gentle 10:1 slope. Once earthwork was completed, the landowner sewed red clover as a nurse crop for the first year to help rejuvenate the organic soils.
