LEGACY PITS & QUARRIES

8000 Legacy Sites in the Province!

Currently there are 8,209 records of legacy pits and quarries throughout Ontario in our database. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) completed the original inventory of these sites in the 1990s, which equated to approximately 6,680 sites. In 2007 the Ontario Geological Survey (OGS) completed an inventory of the newly designated areas and found another
1,300 eligible sites to add to the database. Lastly, the remaining 219 qualifying sites have been added to the database from landowner call-in and verification by MAAP and MNR staff or from newly designated areas. Legacy pits and quarries have been documented if they are located in designated areas under the Aggregate Resources Act (ARA) and never held a licence prior to December 31, 1989.

Based on inventories like the example above many legacy files could be closed as there was evidently no need for rehabilitation. The reality is many of these legacy site have reverted to other uses for a number of reasons. To date 6,063 files have been closed and to see examples throughout Ontario visit the MAAP Online Reporting Tool (MORT) or by clicking below.
