The Dent legacy pit had become a dumping ground for locals and had accumulated a significant pile of debris over the years since it had been extracted. A group of new landowners, interested in the MAAP program, took on the challenge of cleaning up the site in preparation of earthwork. A plan was developed to incorporate the pit into the working farm adjacent to the pit. With a pit face of ~6.5 meters in height, a fairly good swath of field was peeled back in order to achieve a very safe, workable grade of 15:1. The contractor took great care in preserving the organic soils in the area around the pit that was stripped prior to grading that were then evenly distributed across the entire site. The site was successfully growing beans the following spring.
