19-06e Township of Darling, Lanark County

The Renaud pit is in Lanark County, just south of the village of Calabogie on Highway 511. Obviously, an old wayside pit for road construction, it was primarily an old pit floor supporting very little herbaceous plant life. The slopes were relatively well vegetated with a mix of pine, oak, maple and poplar. There was no topsoil available on site which would have normally greatly restricted the opportunity to advance a rehabilitation effort. This site, as well as several others in similarly challenged conditions, were hydroseeded with Proganics Biotic Soil Media with a heavy mix of hardy grasses and clovers. Although the product has been around for some time, this is a new approach for the MAAP program in addressing such challenges. The initial uses have proven to be quite successful and we will be monitoring these sites to assess the efficacy in establishing lush, dense vegetation on barren sites.
