The Linthorst pit was about 2 ha in size and divided a farm field making it unworkable and only good for pasturing cattle. While relatively shallow, the design called for some very tight control in achieving a fairly flat final grade with a slight, 2% swale through middle to affect positive drainage. The following year the landowner was enjoying a bountiful crop of corn.
